Healthcare workers in Machakos County have given a formal warning to the county government, notifying them of an imminent strike lasting for seven days. Unless the concerns raised by the workers are addressed, the strike will commence on Monday, July 17, 2023.
The medical professionals are requesting that the county government ensure an adequate supply of essential resources and promote them to their rightful positions. They argue that the scarcity of supplies hinders their ability to provide high-quality care to patients, while the lack of promotions has dampened their morale.
Ann Wanyaga, the Treasurer of the Kenya National Union of Nurses in the Machakos branch, expressed disappointment over the county government's failure to address their grievances, despite prior agreements. She noted that the current administration had been given a grace period from April to June to resolve the issues, but no progress has been made.
Dr. Charles Okumu, Chair of the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentists Union in the Lower Eastern region, emphasized that the shortage of basic supplies has placed healthcare workers in a difficult position. He mentioned that a notice had been issued to the county government two weeks ago, highlighting the same concerns regarding both supplies and promotions.
The impending strike is anticipated to have a significant impact on healthcare services within Machakos County. If the strike proceeds, patients will be compelled to seek treatment in neighboring counties. As of now, the county government has not responded to the strike notice.
